Your New Favourite Chocolate Chip Slice Recipe for Morning Tea

There’s something comforting about baking from a handwritten recipe book — the smudges of cocoa, the scribbled notes in the margins, and the feeling that each page holds a story. I found this recipe for Chocolate Chip Slice in one of Mum’s old cookbooks, written in her familiar script, and I couldn’t resist giving it a try.

It’s a simple one-bowl recipe — no mixer needed, no complicated steps — just the kind of baking that feels easy and joyful. The result is a soft, chewy slice, filled with rich chocolate pieces that melt perfectly into the mix. It’s ideal for those moments when you want a sweet treat in a hurry or need something to serve with morning tea.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • ½ cup desiccated coconut
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 125g butter, melted
  • 400g condensed milk
  • 125g dark chocolate, chopped or choc bits

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Line a slice pan (27.5cm x 17.7cm / 11in x 7in) with baking paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients except the chocolate.
  3. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  4. Lightly press the chocolate pieces into the top.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the centre springs back when lightly pressed.
  6. Allow to cool in the tin, then cut into squares.

Store in an airtight container — if it lasts that long!

Tips and Serving Suggestions

  • Use milk or white chocolate for a sweeter variation.
  • Swap half the coconut for rolled oats for a slightly firmer, rustic slice.
  • Slice and freeze for up to a month — perfect for lunchboxes or visitors.
  • Serve warm for a gooey dessert, or at room temperature for that perfect chewy texture.

This simple baking recipe is ideal for lunchboxes, visitors, or a last-minute dessert. Serve warm for gooey indulgence, or at room temperature for a classic chewy texture. Either way, it’s sure to become your go-to quick afternoon tea treat.
