I Love Sewing Fabric Fabric Bags – Here’s Why
There’s something deeply satisfying about creating something useful with your own two hands. Sewing fabric bags combines creativity, practicality and sustainability — all in one simple project. Whether you’re new to sewing or rediscovering an old hobby, fabric bags are a wonderful way to start.
Unlike clothing projects that require fitting, bags are forgiving. You can play with colours, textures and patterns without worrying about precise measurements. The result is something beautiful and functional — perfect for gifting, shopping, or just brightening your day. I have a huge stash of fabrics – some collected by me and the rest inherited from Mum who was a lifelong sewer. She made all our childhood clothes and was using homemade grocery bags before the rest of world invented them. Selecting different fabrics for the outer, lining, pockets, straps, etc is part of the fun.
Making your own bags also supports a slower, more thoughtful lifestyle. For those of use over 60, creating can be very fulfilling. Instead of buying plastic or fast-fashion tote bags, you can choose fabrics that reflect your personality and values — from recycled denim to soft linens or cheerful cotton prints.

Getting Ready to Sew Fabric Bags: Tools and Equipment
You don’t need a fancy setup to make fabric bags. A few essentials will take you a long way:
- Sewing machine: Any basic model will do. Even a second-hand machine works perfectly for beginner projects. My 40 year old Pfaff machine continues to serve me well.
- Fabric scissors: Keep a sharp pair reserved for fabric only.
- Pins or clips: To hold layers together neatly while sewing.
- Measuring tape and ruler: For accurate cutting and straight edges.
- Iron and ironing board: Pressing your seams makes a huge difference in the final look.
- Thread and needles: Choose thread colours that match or contrast beautifully with your fabric.
Optional extras like rotary cutters, cutting mats and fabric markers make the process faster and more precise, but they’re not essential when you’re just starting out.

Finding Inspiration and Free Patterns to Sew Fabric Bags
There are endless options for bag styles — from simple drawstring pouches to structured handbags or quilted totes. Beginners might start with a lined tote bag, while more experienced sewists can experiment with zippers, pockets or patchwork.
You can find free sewing patterns and tutorials on sites such as:
- She Can Sew – a treasure trove of beginner-friendly patterns
- All Free Sewing – a collection of free bag projects in every style
- Sew Modern Bags – a small collection of a variety of bags, pouches, and messenger bags
- MADE Everyday – a Youtube channel with great tutorials
I have made 2 versions of the Perfect Cross Body Bag from the She Can Sew website because the bag is the perfect size for everyday use, has 2 zippered pockets, and is fully lined.

Why We Keep Coming Back to Sewing Fabric Bags
Sewing fabric bags is more than just a pastime — it’s a mindful, creative escape. Each stitch is a small reminder that we can make useful things with love and intention. The process can be calming and meditative, giving a sense of accomplishment that few store-bought items can match.
It’s also a beautiful way to repurpose leftover fabric scraps or give new life to an old shirt or curtain. Every bag tells its own story — and you’ll never have to carry the same one as anyone else.
