At nearly 62 (let’s be honest), I imagined I would have more energy. After all, I’m no longer juggling full-time work or racing from one responsibility to another. The alarm is rarely set and the majority of time can decide when I do tasks and fun activitied. Yet I often find myself feeling weary — not just physically, but mentally. It’s a different kind of tiredness that seems to come from years of doing, caring, and striving. I am now on a quest to learn how to boost energy naturally after 60.
Semi-retirement brings freedom, but it also brings a shift in rhythm. Without the structure of a workday, my energy sometimes feels scattered. Some days I wake up full of enthusiasm; others, I just want to sit quietly with a cup of coffee and do nothing at all. At the end of an ‘unproductive day’, I feel a bit like a failure, but I’ve learned that this isn’t failure or laziness — it’s simply my body asking for a new kind of balance.
Over time, I’ve found some natural ways to manage this gentle fatigue and to feel more alive in my days. I am giving these a try to see how they affect my energy levels.
Natural Steps for Boosting Energy After 60
Honour Your Natural Rythms
One of the gifts of this stage of life is not having to set an alarm clock. I’ve learned to stop fighting my body’s natural rhythm. If I wake early, I enjoy that peaceful time until I am ready to put my feet on the floor and get going. I have a very generous partner who gets up to entertain our teenage Kelpie who believes that the correct time to rise each day is just before sunrise. If I need a nap in the afternoon, I will take one without guilt. Usually I don’t need to sleep, but rest my body so reading a book is a pleasurable experience. Listening to my own energy patterns, rather than pushing against them, helps me conserve energy, find a steadier pace, and manage tiredness naturally.
Move Gently but Often
I used to think exercise had to be intense to be effective. I would keep a diary and check off the exercises and become annoyed with myself when I didn’t stick to the plan. This was often, because I don’t like exercise. One of my goals for boosing energy naturally after 60 is to bring movement back to life. Now, I realise that gentle, regular movement — walking outdoors or indoors and gardening — is often more sustainable. Movement increases circulation, lifts mood, and keeps the body supple. On days when I don’t feel up to much, I simply go outside for ten minutes. The fresh air alone can shift my energy. If I walk around the block, I will celebrate it.

Eat for Energy, Not Perfection
Food can be both comfort and fuel. I have a habit of skipping meals when I am home alone, partly due to the effort of making them but also to not finding anything appetising in the fridge. I’ve noticed that skipping meals or eating on the run makes me even more tired. This is also a product of having a home-based business. Simple, balanced meals with fresh fruit, vegetables, and enough protein make a big difference. I am currently having smoothies for lunch – not those green ones filled with kale and wheatgrass but with delicious fruit, yoghurt, peanut butter and yoghurt. Buying a Magic Bullet was one my best purchases recently. I also try to stay hydrated — it’s amazing how often tiredness is really thirst. I’m not perfect, but being mindful rather than strict has helped me feel better.

Protect Rest as Sacred
In a culture that celebrates busyness, rest can feel indulgent. But rest is not optional — it’s necessary. It’s one of the most underrated tools for boosting energy naturally after 60. Whether it’s sitting quietly in the garden, reading something uplifting, or simply doing nothing, I try to make space for stillness each day. Rest restores not just energy, but joy. If you struggle to create an atmosphere to create a peaceful environment, why not try some flameless LED candles, wooden wind chimes, or a sound machine.

Finding Meaning, Not Just Activity to Boost your Energy
In semi-retirement, it’s easy to fill days with small tasks that keep us busy but not fulfilled. I’ve learned that meaning gives energy. If I have spent the day being busy but not productive, by the time evening arrives, I feel tired and irritated with myself. The right king of ‘busy’ feels nourishing, creates purpose and a sense of accomplishment each day.

Be Kind to Yourself
Perhaps the most important lesson of all is gentleness. Our bodies and lives change with age, and that’s not something to resist. I try to speak to myself in a positive tone, humour and looking forward to each day as it comes. Being kind to yourself is also part of learning to feel beautiful.
Tiredness at this stage of life isn’t a flaw to fix; it’s a signal to slow down and realign. When I treat my energy as something precious, not limitless, I find there’s still plenty to do — just at a pace that feels right for me.

One of the best things what we can all do for ourselves is honor our bodies natural rhythms and honor our need to rest. As well as choosing the ring kind of busy for us, rather than just filling our day with tasks that don’t add meaning our purpose to our lives.
And honestly? Rest is productive.
