Embracing Semi-Retirement: Finding Joy in Everyday Life
Hello and welcome! I’m so glad you’ve found your way here.
My name is Anne and I’m stepping into that beautiful and sometimes uncertain stage of life known as “semi-retirement.” After a career in healthcare, I’ve reached a moment where the pace has slowed – at least a little – and space has opened to rediscover creativity, curiority, and joy in the everyday.
Finding Balance in a New Season of Life
The shift from full-time work to a more flexible lifestyle hasn’t been seamless. When your office is at home, it’s easy for work to seep into every hour. Learning to slow down, to give myself permission to rest and explore, has been both a challenge and a gift. I’m learning that productivity doesn’t have to define worth and that quiet moments can be just as meaningful as busy ones.
One small habit that has made a big difference in this next chapter of life is keeping a gratitude journal by my bedside. Taking just a few minutes each morning or evening to note the things I’m thankful for helps me slow down, reflect, and focus on the simple joys that make life meaningful. A simple journal like this can be a wonderful companion for anyone exploring semi-retirement or intentional living.

Why I Started This blog
Next Chapter Living is my way of exploring what it means to live well after 50 or 60. It’s a space for reflection, creativity, and growth—where I can share ideas, small experiments, and honest thoughts about navigating this next stage of life.
Here you’ll find posts about:
- Food & Cooking → simple, wholesome recipes and kitchen inspiration for everyday life.
- Gardening → growing food, flowers, and happiness, even in small spaces.
- Sustainability → practical ways to reuse, reduce, and live more lightly on the planet. If you enjoy exploring sustainability, check out my post on 20 Ways to Reuse Cardboard.
- Travel & Out and About → reflections from day trips, travel and local adventures.
- Creativity & Learning → hobbies, crafts, books, and ways to keep the mind active.
- Random Musings – thoughts about change, gratitude, and finding beauty in small things

What “Next Chapter” Means to Me
This chapter isn’t about slowing down—it’s about opening up. It’s about curiosity, kindness, and the courage to try new things without worrying about perfection. I’ve come to see that joy doesn’t always come from grand plans; it often appears in the simple routines that make life feel grounded—tending to plants, cooking a favourite meal, or sharing tea with friends. If you love making sweet treats, here a couple of my favourite recipes:
- Monkey Nuts Biscuits – timeless flavours of cocnut, cocoa and nuts.
- Cumin Cookies – cumin is an unusual flavour for biscuits but these are incredibly delicious.
I believe each of us can shape our “next chapter” with intention. Whether that means travelling somewhere new, learning a skill, or finally taking time to rest, these choices remind us that it’s never too late to redefine what a full life looks like.

Join Me on the Journey
My hope is that this blog feels like a friendly space—somewhere you can pause, reflect, and perhaps find ideas that spark your own creativity. Whether you’re navigating retirement, searching for balance, or simply curious about sustainable and mindful living, I invite you to follow along.
