How to Enjoy Hosting Visitors in Your Home

Building a Home to Share

Last week was truly wonderful and here is why. We built our home with the intention of sharing it — a place where family and friends could come to stay, relax, and breathe clean air. Living about two hours out of town means that quick visits for coffee aren’t really possible, therefore hosting visitors was always part of the plan. I always imaged the sound of laughter drifting down the hallway, meals shared around the table, and the gentle hum of conversations.

I Hold Back from Hosting Visitors Because I Feel the House Needs to be Perfect

Yet, over time, I’ve noticed that we haven’t had as many visitors as I once imagined we would. There are many reasons, of course — distance, busy lives, timing — but part of it also comes from me. I feel the house isn’t clean enough or organised enough to welcome guests. I’m not particularly neat and would much rather sew or garden that clean the house, so the dust accumulates. I’ve realised that my hesitation has come from wanting everything to look “just right”, “Home Beautiful” and “new home” rather than focussing on what truly matters: the people themselves.

Rediscovering What Really Matters

Last week reminded me what really matters and the joy of connection. The house felt alive — full of chatter, cooking smells, and laughter. My sister came to stay, and soon after, my son visited too.
We did a lot of talking, played games, wandered through the shops and shared many laughs. My son is a baker, so the delicious smell of fresh bread filled the house, adding to the feeling of comfort and home. Even the simplest meals – spaghetti bolognaise, fish and salad, and smoked chicken and pickles on fresh bread felt felt special when shared.

Having visitors forced me to slow down, stop the mindless activities that usually fill my time, and simply have fun. It reminded me that life feels richer when we make space for others, even if things aren’t perfect. Hosting helped me rediscover gratitude for our home — not as a showpiece, but as a place of belonging.

Learning to Appreciate the Home You Have

I’m learning to feel proud of the home we’ve created, just as it is. It’s a home that reflects who we are — comfortable, welcoming, and a little imperfect. A home doesn’t need to look like a magazine photo to be inviting; it just needs warmth and intention. The people who come to visit aren’t looking for perfection — they’re looking for connection, stories, and time together.

Gentle Reminders for Hosting Visitors

  • Your home doesn’t need to be perfect to be inviting.
  • The people who matter most aren’t judging the dust — they’re looking for you. In our case, they are also wanting to experience time out of the city.
  • A few personal touches — Open the windows to let in fresh air, play some music, and pick a few flowers or greenery from your garden.
  • Leaving out tea and coffee making items so guests can help themselves – if feels thoughout and avoids them rummaging through the cupboards.
  • Every visit adds a new memory, not a new mess.

A Takeaway Thought

This week, I was reminded that connection — and slowing down to enjoy it — is worth far more than perfection. Hosting visitors doesn’t have to be stressful. It can be a joy, an opportunity to reconnect, and a gentle reminder that life’s best moments often happen around the kitchen table.

And if you’d like to make your home feel extra welcoming, try baking a loaf of bread. You don’t need special equipment or ingredients — just time and a willingness to share. The smell alone might convince you to invite guests more often.
